Here’s the thing about a book club: everyone thinks it’s a great idea, but not many people want to do it. The posts about me having a book club are incredibly successful. Seriously, they’re some of my most popular. But the follow-through is limited, which I completely understand. For me the joy of reading is just as much about shopping for books, talking about books, and adding books to my to-read pile, than actually sitting down and reading.
Last month, I offered two classic authors for musing on our Discord server. Virginia Woolf and HP Lovecraft. To close that chapter, I just want to say that both are genius’ in completely different ways (not a new assertion, but valid). Lovecraft’s prose is electric - and I was shocked by how genuinely scary his short stories were, mainly because the ideas are just so flippin’ weird. He stretches your imagination.
Woolf’s genius is maddeningly complex. There is little ‘plot’, but her switching between points of view, and her ability to hold multiple interior lives in a single passage is stunning. I’m still recovering from To The Lighthouse. Not an easy read, but very rewarding.
This month, I’m continuing my journey in reading Stephen King chronologically. I’ll let you know the books I’m up to for paid subscribers. I’ll fire off about King for paid subscribers too, and you’ll be welcome to the Discord server also. If you’re a King fan, or have thoughts, you’re welcome to join!
