Stop Press: I have just read 'The Bright Sword' by Lev Grossman, a very large paperback but containing a superb rendering of the Knights of the Round Table and their no-frills adventures. The modern language makes it an accessible story particularly for teenage readers.

Old God's Time by Sebastian Barry and The Animals in That Country by Laura Jean McKay as two of my favourites, they swirl in and out of reality in a tense and bewitching manner.
